Dr. Timothy P. Weber joined EFL Associates in 2007 as Senior Consultant, Higher Education Practice, in the Denver office. For thirty years, Dr. Weber served as a teacher, scholar, vice president of academic affairs, and president in four institutions of graduate theological education. He taught general church history and the history of American religion at Denver Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he served as the David T. Porter Professor of Church History. In his two major works, he explored how religious beliefs have shaped American culture and politics: Living in the Shadow of the Second Coming: American Premillennialism, 1875-1982 (1984) and On the Road to Armageddon: How Evangelicals Became Israel’s Best Friend (2004), which was nominated for a Grawemeyer Award in Religion. He has also written dozens of book chapters and articles in journals, magazines, and major reference works. He is frequently called on by the print and electronic media to comment on the intersection of American religion and politics.
For nearly a decade, Dr. Weber served as an academic administrator: Vice President and Dean at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, IL, and President of Memphis Theological Seminary in Tennessee. In these positions, Dr. Weber became known as an innovator and a problem-solver. He led in the implementation of new standards for curriculum assessment; the creation of new academic specialties and degrees; the diversification of the faculty and staff; the implementation of an innovative faculty program of professional development and goalsetting; the design of new administrative structures emphasizing team-work, enhanced communication, and accountability; the formulation of academic and institutional strategic planning; and the development of new strategies for investment funds.
In addition to his scholarly and administrative work, Dr. Weber has extensive experience in the area of accreditation, having served in various capacities with the Association of Theological Schools, which accredits over 250 theological schools in the United States and Canada. He chaired numerous campus visitation committees for reaccreditation; served on various task forces, including one responsible for the development of new accrediting standards; and has been a consultant assisting the Association in understanding the changing relationship between churches and theological schools and the future of theological education.
Dr. Weber has also been a member of the Panel of Advisors of the Auburn Center for the Study of Theological Education in New York and has directed a study on “Faith and Finances,” a joint project by the Auburn Center and the Lilly Endowment that examines how theological schools and denominational judicatories can better prepare ministry students as financial managers in local congregations. As a result of such experience, Dr. Weber has a unique understanding of the world in which theological schools and other faith-based educational institutions operate, their important niche in American higher education, and the distinctive constituencies that they serve.
Dr. Weber will be joining a distinguished team of higher education consultants that includes Dr. David G. Horner, Dr. Michael Ferrari, and Dr. Gordon Lamb, who together served as institutional presidents/chancellors for 56 years.
